Sometimes you may find that over the course of a year you have entered the same donor's name more than once (perhaps with slightly different spellings) and have perhaps entered donations under both versions of the name. You cannot just delete one of the names immediately, because they already have donations.
You can fix this with the Database ⇒ Merge Duplicate Donors menu option.
You can check periodically for possible duplicate entries of the same donor with the Reports ⇒ Donor ⇒ Potential Duplicates report, although that also finds names that sound similar.
